Plants in Scripture: How Christians Have Viewed Herbal Remedies

Plants Woven Through the Biblical Story

From the very first chapters of Genesis, plants play a central role in the story of Scripture. God places Adam and Eve in a garden filled with "every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food." Long before pharmacies existed, people turned to what grew around them for nourishment and relief, and the Bible reflects that reality throughout its pages.

This does not mean Scripture presents herbs as magic or a substitute for God's healing power. Rather, plants are consistently shown as part of the created order that people were given to steward and use wisely.

Specific Plants Mentioned in the Bible

Scripture references many plants that were used for both food and remedy in the ancient world.

  • Balm of Gilead, associated with soothing and healing in Jeremiah
  • Hyssop, used in cleansing rituals throughout the Old Testament
  • Frankincense and myrrh, valued for their aromatic and medicinal properties
  • Olive oil, used for anointing and as a base for remedies
  • The leaves of the tree of life in Revelation, described as being "for the healing of the nations"

These references show a consistent thread: the natural world contains resources that people have long recognized as useful for care and comfort.

Wisdom Literature and the Value of Knowledge

The book of Proverbs praises wisdom and the pursuit of understanding in all areas of life, including how to care for the body. Ecclesiastes speaks of a "time to heal," acknowledging that healing is a real and valued part of human experience. Many Christians throughout history have taken this as encouragement to study the natural world, including plants, as one way of exercising the wisdom Scripture commends.

Balance: Neither Idolizing Nor Dismissing Plants

It is worth being clear about a balance here. Nowhere does Scripture suggest that plants themselves hold spiritual power or that herbal remedies replace trust in God. At the same time, nothing in Scripture condemns the thoughtful use of what God has provided in creation. The danger comes when either extreme takes over — treating herbs as a cure-all, or dismissing them entirely as unspiritual.

Christians who use herbal remedies today often see themselves standing in a long tradition of using creation responsibly, always keeping their ultimate trust in God rather than in any remedy.

Historical Christian Practice

Throughout church history, monasteries were often centers of herbal knowledge, with monks and nuns cultivating gardens and preparing remedies for their communities. This tradition reflects a longstanding Christian conviction that caring for the sick, including through the plants God provided, is a genuine expression of love for neighbor.
