Is Chiropractic Care Safe? Understanding Risks and Caution

By Matthew Papke, Christ Healing Institute4 min read

Asking the Right Question First

Anyone considering chiropractic care for the first time is right to ask whether it is safe. It is a fair question, and a good chiropractor will welcome it rather than brush it aside. The honest answer is that, for most people, chiropractic care carries a low overall risk, but like any hands-on treatment it is not entirely without risk, and some caution is genuinely warranted in certain situations.

What the Research Says About Risk

Most patients experience mild, short-lived side effects after an adjustment, such as soreness or fatigue in the treated area, similar to what you might feel after a workout. These effects typically resolve within a day or two.

Serious complications are rare but have been documented, particularly involving neck manipulation and, in very rare cases, effects on blood vessels in the neck. Because these events are uncommon, researchers have had difficulty establishing exactly how much risk manipulation itself adds compared to the general population's baseline risk. What is clear is that serious complications are uncommon, but not impossible, which is why proper screening before treatment matters.

Who Should Be Especially Cautious

Certain conditions call for extra caution or may mean chiropractic adjustments are not appropriate at all, including:

  • Osteoporosis or significantly weakened bones
  • Certain spinal conditions, such as spinal cord compression
  • Recent fractures or spinal surgery
  • Some blood vessel conditions affecting the neck
  • Certain inflammatory arthritis conditions

This is exactly why a thorough health history and exam matter so much on your first visit. A responsible chiropractor will ask about these factors before ever performing an adjustment, and will refer you elsewhere if something in your history raises concern.

Questions Worth Asking

Before beginning care, it is entirely reasonable to ask your chiropractor:

  • How will you screen me for risk factors before treating me?
  • What technique do you plan to use, and why?
  • What should I watch for after treatment that would mean I should call you?
  • Under what circumstances would you refer me to a doctor instead?

A chiropractor who answers these questions clearly and without defensiveness is demonstrating exactly the kind of care you want.

Trusting Wisdom Over Convenience

Scripture repeatedly commends wisdom and discernment, and choosing a healthcare practitioner is no exception. Chiropractic care can be a genuinely helpful part of caring for your body, but that does not mean every provider or every technique is right for every person. Taking a little extra time to ask questions and understand the risks honors both good judgment and good stewardship of the body you have been given.
