Christians and Chinese Medicine: Sorting Technique from Religion

By Matthew Papke, Christ Healing Institute4 min read

A question many Christians ask

Christians curious about acupuncture, cupping, or Chinese herbal medicine often pause with a fair question: does using these therapies mean adopting a non-Christian religious worldview? It is a good question to take seriously rather than dismiss, and thoughtful Christian practitioners have wrestled with it directly.

Where the tradition actually comes from

Traditional Chinese medicine developed within a cultural and philosophical context shaped by Taoism and other Chinese religious and philosophical traditions. Concepts like qi, yin and yang, and the five elements were originally explained through that worldview, and some contemporary practitioners still use and believe in that framework fully.

Being honest about this history is important. It does not need to be minimized or hidden to make the therapies more comfortable for Christian patients.

The distinction that matters

Many Christian practitioners draw a line between the clinical technique, developed and refined through centuries of observed patient outcomes, and the metaphysical explanation originally offered for why the technique works. A helpful comparison: a massage therapist manipulating muscle tissue is performing a physical technique, even if some historical massage traditions were explained through frameworks modern practitioners no longer hold. Using a technique does not require adopting every belief that accompanied its historical development.

Applied to acupuncture, this means a Christian practitioner might insert needles at points identified through centuries of clinical mapping, while explaining the resulting effects through nerve stimulation, circulation, and the body's natural healing response, rather than the language of energy flow through meridians.

Practical guardrails for Christian patients

If you want to pursue Chinese medicine therapies while staying grounded in your faith, consider these questions with a practitioner:

  • How do you personally understand and explain what happens during treatment?
  • Do you incorporate any religious rituals, chants, or practices I should know about?
  • Are you comfortable with me praying, or would you pray with me, in Christian terms?
  • Can you explain the therapy's purpose in plain, physical language rather than only traditional metaphysical language?

A practitioner's willingness to answer directly, rather than deflecting, tells you a great deal.

Not every Christian will land the same place

It is worth saying plainly that thoughtful Christians disagree on where exactly to draw these lines, and that is alright. Some feel completely comfortable using acupuncture points explained in physical terms; others prefer to avoid the tradition altogether out of caution. Both convictions can be held with integrity, and neither deserves mockery.

Practitioners who take this seriously
